I admit it, I'm a steampunk lover.
Steampunk, for those who don't want to click the link, is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction that denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date.
And, over the holiday break, I streamed Steamboy onto my XBOX 360 from Netflix. It was an interesting movie, an allegory on nuclear power shown with steam, with quotes like:
An invention with no philosophy behind it is a curse.
It was a longish movie, a shade over 2 hours, but you didn't really notice that. And, while it was anime, it was a photo-realistic anime that had stunningly beautiful cinematography. I use that word rather than animation because that is how it appeared. Unlike much of the anime that makes it over to the US, this one wasn't dubbed but rather had subtitles, so the original actors' emotions came through.
If you like anime, or steampunk, I recommend the movie. I give it 5 stars out of 5.
