The title for today's blog comes from no less august a personality than King Henry II of England (1154-1189). What he actually said has been lost to the mists of time and I prefer the version that goes:
What miserable drones and traitors have I nourished and brought up in my household, who let their Lord be treated with such shameful contempt by a low-born cleric?
In any case, it's one of the earliest recorded instances of plausable deniability. As a result of this "casual comment of frustration," four of his knights rode hard to Canterbury and killed Thomas Becket, who had been causing issues with negotiations with the Pope.
I mention all this becaus I thought of it this morning when I heard about the psychologist in Texas who recommended to her staff to stop diagnosing PTSD in veterans. (See article here.)
I agree with the soldiers, it's highly unlikely the psychologist did this on her own initiative. I just wonder whose muttering about meddlesome priests made her take action.
Twouldn't surprise me to find it was the C-in-C himself, upset with how PTSD tends to lessen the glory of our domino theory of democracy for the Middle East.
And to have this story break for this weekend....
Peace, gentle readers
